So Sharon Ambrose’s “convincing” victory in the Ward 6 D.C. Council special election “may scare off potential challengers” in next year’s race (Loose Lips, 5/2). Let’s see—one-quarter of registered voters actually voted; of those that voted, one-quarter cast their ballots for Ambrose. What a mandate! And Loose Lips attributes the margin of victory to white Republican voters on Capitol Hill. Now, there’s a force to be reckoned with—in a ward that is 70 percent black and 90 percent Democratic!

Voter turnout will be significantly higher next year, when we’ll also be voting for mayor. So isn’t it a little premature to declare Ambrose the victor in November 1998?
