After reading “Waste Treatment Facilities” (4/25), I’m glad that I am in Arlington’s mental health system and not the District’s. However, there is one aspect to mental health that is being used in both systems: the clubhouse model program.

The clubhouse model was started about 50 years ago in New York City by a small group of the mentally ill population who were tired of the standard treatments, many of which were mentioned in your article.

Clubhouse models are now countrywide, with most still in New England, and there are more being added around the world. The District’s clubhouse is the Green Door and occupies a nondescript building at 1623 16th St. NW. Granted, it’s run by a private organization, but it’s there. For a follow-up article, I suggest that you send someone to talk with the staff and members of the Green Door.

In short, all is not lost when it comes to the District’s mental health system. You just have to know where to look.
