SUNDAY

Usually mergers and acquisitions have unpleasant aftereffects—layoffs, widespread insecurity, callous disregard for workers in the quest for a higher bottom line—but filmmaker Haile Gerima has managed to put a politically conscious spin on an otherwise nasty consequence of business. Using proceeds from his independent film, Sankofa, he acquired a building on Georgia Avenue and has joined with Haki Madhubuti of Third World Press to open Sankofa Video and Books. The “Gala Opening of Sankofa” festivities begin with a libation ceremony, followed by readings, live music, and African food. Filmmakers connected to Gerima’s company, Mypheduh Films, will show clips and discuss their latest projects. Third World Press will present authors Sonia Sanchez, John Henrik Clarke, Acklyn Lynch, and Brian Gilmore signing books at various posts in the house. Celebrate Mother’s Day by enjoying the cultural gifts of our original mother—Africa. From 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at Sankofa Video and Books, 2714 Georgia Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 234-4755. (Holly Bass)
