Unlike Guru, a fusionist working in a similar vein with Jazzmatazz, the members of Buckshot LeFonque resist fronting like they’re blazing a noble trail. Sure, on Buckshot’s latest, Music Evolution, leader Branford Marsalis makes it clear that if you don’t like his band’s shit you can lick it, but that’s just a guy blowing off steam for deserving more credit than he gets. If Evolution is low on gritty street beats, that’s because, firstly, it’s not just a hiphop record, and secondly, the band sticks to what it does best: playing. Whether he’s flipping the script or reading it right-side-up in different dialects, Branford may not prove to be as gifted as, say, his brother, but he’s far more funky and flexible.
