SATURDAY

After Ali Akbar Khan, Amjad Ali Khan is the best-known contemporary player of the sarod, an essential instrument in traditional Hindustani music. Though smaller than a sitar, the 24-string sarod also has sympathetic strings underneath the primary ones, which yield rich undertones as the four main strings provide the sinuous melody. Khan will be accompanied by another sarod player, Ayaan Ali Bangash, as well as Amaan Ali Bangash on tanpura (a four-string drone instrument) and Tanmoy Bose on tabla. At 7:30 p.m. at the Freer Gallery’s Meyer Auditorium, 12th & Jefferson Dr. SW. FREE. (202) 357-3200. (Mark Jenkins)
