For most of its decade-plus history, Poi Dog Pondering has been a freewheeling acoustic orchestra sculpting atmospherics so innocently soft and sweet that the mere suggestion to toughen-up the formula would have seemed cruel. Nonetheless, after relocating to Chicago and re-emerging with Pomegranate, that’s exactly what leader Frank Orrall did. The band’s newfound respect for feedback and funk won’t sit well with those who are partial to the quiet bliss of early Poi Dog. But as the band’s torrid new live album, Liquid White Light, demonstrates, bliss isn’t strictly the province of those who believe in it. At 7:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $12.
