While playing a variety of traditional blues, amply proportioned ex-stripper Candye Kane rattles the genre’s macho tradition by announcing, “You Need a Great Big Woman,” admitting, “I’m in Love With a Girl,” and declaring, “The Lord Was a Woman.” Kane is probably the only blueswoman ever to salute “gay, bi, lesbian, and transgender communities everywhere” in an album’s liner notes, but her Diva La Grande is not just a political genre-grab. With Dave Alvin co-producing and taking the strategic solo, the album is too assured to be a mere gimmick. Kane sounds off with Billy Bacon & the Forbidden Pigs at 9 p.m. at Twist & Shout, 4800 Auburn Ave., Bethesda. $9. (301) 652-3383. (MJ)
