When bossa nova’s delicate voice and string structure is mishandled, it becomes either Muzak or halfhearted schlock rock. That has rarely happened on the records of Rio de Janeiro songbird Marisa Monte. Her latest, A Great Noise, is self-produced with noise-guitarist-turned-ethnopopster Arto Lindsay and employs savvy Brazilian and N.Y. instrumentalists who accompany her exquisitely restrained Portuguese trilling. While 1994’s masterful Rose and Charcoal stressed Monte’s honeyed lullaby melodies, this mostly live affair balances bouncier samba and samba-rock experiments with more exuberant, slightly conventional vocals and sultry Brazilian classics. At 8 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $22.50. (703) 549-5919. (Steve Kiviat)
