WEDNESDAY

There was a period in the ’80s when metal went classical, as frizzy-haired fret tappers took on Bach and Beethoven. It was a glorious time for music, and I still pine for Yngwie to do the “Rach 3″—hopefully with the same results as David Helfgott. But the cello and guitar duo Telegraph Melts meld metal with melodies and riffs with rubatos in a way that recalls mathematicians like Slint and Breadwinner over technicians such as Malmsteen. And the Telegraph Melters look much better in Spandex. With Smart Went Crazy at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $3. (202) 667-7960. (Christopher Porter)
