MONDAY

Klezmer received a boost several years ago with the PBS documentary In the Fiddler’s House, in which famed classical violinist Itzhak Perlman explored his ethnic heritage with four of today’s finest klezmer bands: the Klezmatics, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, the Andy Statman Klezmer Orchestra, and Brave Old World. This popular project led to a companion CD, the inevitable live concert tour, another hit, and thus we have this year’s concert, “Return to the Fiddler’s House.” Actually, these programs showcase klezmer’s variety, with the Klezmatics’ dynamic world-fusion style using a more progressive approach, while Brave Old World presents artfully constructed arrangements inspired by classical music and jazz. Statman’s group emphasizes instrumental virtuosity, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band recreates the theatrical sound of groups that played in the ’20s and ’30s. Perlman is amazingly comfortable jamming with all of them. At 8 p.m. at Wolf Trap Filene Center, 1624 Trap Rd., Vienna. $18-28. (703) 255-1860. (Ken Roseman)
