I applaud Ta-Nehisi Coates for the positive piece “Heirs of the Dog” (7/11). His coverage of the Cave Canem retreat was very timely. Though I was not a participant in the retreat, I felt the energy of the poets through his reporting. I agree with the concept of this kind of activity, and believe the African-American community should control its culture. It is the broader community’s loss for not sharing in such richness with objectivity and justice. We need to create more Cave Canems for our writers.
