If only John Cloud had heeded Amanda Ripley’s advice (“New York Fetish,” 8/1), then maybe we would have been spared his butt-kissing ode to New York. Wannabe hip writers, politicos, etc. do not Washington, D.C., make. If he had only ventured from his privileged and profoundly prejudiced circle, he would have realized that much of what Washington has to offer is precisely what has made New York so appealing: ethnically diverse people who try to do more with their lives than act as arbiters of what is hip. Life goes on outside the breadth of his experience in Washington, D.C., and it is rich with just as much culture and character(s) as New York has to offer. You say you’re not going to have any more of Washington, John Cloud? Good. That means more for us.
