What separates the “Movement Poetry Series” from the masses is the band. The Sound Poets (with Donnie West on upright bass, Chuck Ferrell on drums, and Dave Cole on keyboards) play mad-versatile styles. The trio manages to make almost anyone sound good—which gains importance at an open mike. When some tired mack-daddy poet gets going, you can tune out the words and focus on the music. Then again, host Matthew Payne guarantees that there’ll always be at least one hype performer. Tonight’s featured artist goes by the name of No. 24, and he’s a multidimensional vocalist. Don’t be surprised when you start singing along to his catchy choruses as he delivers the spoken/sung/rapped/chanted word. Sign up at 8 p.m. The all-ages show starts at 8:30 p.m. at State of the Union, 1357 U St. NW. $4. (202) 588-8810. (Holly Bass)
