The liner notes to John Cage’s Variations IV blame “the silent conspiracy of those who make their living in the 19th century” for the dearth of performances featuring music by the man called “without doubt the most influential American composer of the last half-century.” Fitting, then, that one group of those plying the medium, members of Silence (the John Cage Internet mailing list), have organized “AtlantiCage Ninety-seven85: A Birthday Circus for John Cage.” Featuring performances by the University of Maryland Percussion Ensemble, and list members including Matthew Ross Davis, Thomas Moore, Joseph Zitt, the fanfare will begin with a tuning meditation on the outdoor brick stage and then travel inside via a listening walk, culminating in multiple overlapping performances. At 8 p.m. at University of Maryland’s Tawes Fine Arts Building, University Blvd. & Adelphi Rd., College Park. FREE. (301) 405-1000. (Daniel Searing)
