There was a time when Roches fans hoped the sisters would never outgrow their quirks—especially Suzzy Roche, the youngest of the three, whose evolved thinking was magnified by how she embraced her youth. Holy Smokes, Suzzy’s solo coming-out, is a delight, if not exactly the equal of the two semilegendary records the trio made in the ’70s and ’80s. (What is?) Suzzy’s still studying the rules of love, and lightning is still scary. But she’s all the wiser now.
