There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Not only is America still abuzz with Scotmania after Braveheart’s exciting Oscar triumphs, but the bonny Scots have caught the fever and decided they would like a parliament of their own for the first time in three centuries. However, the reason I am so Scot-happy is simple: The organizers of this year’s “Scottish Heritage Fair” sent me an entire box of delicious Scottish shortbread cookies. Don’t think this was a bribe or that I may be bought for a few crackers. The thoughtful gift was merely an unexpected thank you for my having mentioned the always fabulous fair two years ago. I would never blindly promote a wonderful day of Scotcentric weavers, fiddlers, genealogists, singing, dancing, storytelling, food, sports, and those wacky highland cattle just because of some crisp, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth treats. And if any other ethnic group thinks my opinion is for sale, well, just try me. The pipes are calling from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Fort Ward Park, 4301 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria. FREE. (703) 883-4686.
