June Tabor’s stark singing style stands out in a British folk scene still dominated by pretty soprano voices. What’s more, her choice of dark ballads cements her status as an outsider. Over the past few years, Tabor’s folk-jazz-chamber sound has developed precision, as on her latest CD, Aleyn. Richard Thompson fans will find Tabor’s version of “The Great Valerio” radically different from his, and her dramatic interpretation of “Bentley and Craig,” about the famous London murder trial, haunting.
