WEDNESDAY
Who can resist a bagel with a touch of sun-dried tomato spread for lunch? Well, good luck finding good rounds in the District. The local excuse for a bagel pales in comparison to what you can get in places like N.Y.N.Y. or Montreal, where fresh hot ones are as popular as doughnuts on Route 1. You’d almost be better off making your own, and thanks to Joan Nathan, the Martha Stewart of Hannukah, you can: She includes a recipe for bagels in her new book, The Jewish Holiday Baker. It’s in the Yom Kippur section, a holy day all about fasting, but as in religious events of all denominations, food plays a major part. We feel guilty, then we eat. Nathan discusses and signs her book at 7 p.m. at the D.C. Jewish Community Center, 16th & Q Sts. NW. $9. (202) 518-9400; and at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Politics & Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 364-1919. (Tina Plottel)
