SUNDAY
Those who heard Amitiyah Elayne Hyman when she was a minister at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church know her powerful presence. Her prayers were soul-filled poetic elegies delivered in a mellifluous voice that sometimes broke into song. Now she’s answering another calling—to spread her message through poetry. Her one-woman show, Emergence/See, chronicles the difficult common experiences of women. And whether speaking of her own experiences as a mother and a breast cancer survivor or adopting the persona of a teenage mother or an elderly woman, Hyman embodies the spirit of each subject. Emergence/See reflects her own “coming out,” as she puts it, from fear and silence into love and self-realization. At 7:30 p.m. at District of Columbia Arts Center, 2438 18th St. NW. $10. (202) 462-7833. (Holly Bass)
