WEDNESDAY

While most people learn the importance of sharing as tots, it took Terell Stafford five adult years of playing in Bobby Watson and Victor Lewis’ Horizon. Granted, the young trumpeter was learning collective improvisation in a band led by a couple of older masters rather than a group that made sure everyone got a chance to use his crayons. Stafford’s own maturity is evident on his second album, Centripetal Force, where the assistant professor of music at Temple shares his solo space with a multitude of instruments, from French horn to vibraphone to extra percussion in a playful post-bop setting of standards with a couple originals. See Stafford and his playmates give and take at 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $19.75. (202) 337-4141. (CP)
