Tonight, One Step Down begins its own version of the Village Vanguard’s famous big-band Monday nights. And while the Vanguard ain’t big, the One Step makes a shoebox seem roomy. In fact, as the club begins to pack the joint with both patrons and musicians, you may find yourself sharing a seat with the tuba player. (Be wary of his spit valve.) The One Step plans to toss a couple of rows of tables out onto its patio to make room for the 16 members of trumpeter Thad Wilson’s Big Band Orchestra, which begins the first of three sets at 9 p.m. at One Step Down, 2517 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. $5.
