WEDNESDAY

You might not have noticed, but ’97 was a great year for singles, featuring such instant radio classics as “Mmmbop,” “Song 2,” and “Tubthumping.” But while most of the year’s unstoppably groovy tunes announced themselves ostentatiously, Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy” snuck up on you. A couple of months ago, after a few random encounters, I found myself trying to sing it from memory—in vain, since the only line I could recall was “Mama this surely is a dream.” Thankfully, the tastemakers at HFS and DC101 decided at that moment to put the song on the overplaylist, and their listeners have since fallen for a tune slinky enough to pull off as doubtful a lyrical gambit as “There she was/Like disco lemonade.” See if the Playgroundlings have anything else half as infectious when they play with Lincoln at 8:45 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $5.
