Jazz harmonica virtuoso Hendrick Meurkens arrives downtown tonight, in the latest stop in a journey that has taken him from his native Germany to Boston’s Berklee College of Music to Brazil, where his playing was embraced by that country’s musicians. A resident of New York since 1993, he has recorded seven CDs, performed with Charlie Byrd, Lionel Hampton, Ray Brown, and harmonica legend Toot Thielemans, and appeared on the soundtrack of the film Dolores Claiborne. His new CD, Dig This Samba!, a collaboration with pianist Manfredo Fest, is a carnival of Brazilian melodies and rhythms, technically startling yet instantly accessible. This weekend, he’ll be accompanied by three of the area’s finest musicians: pianist Bill Harris, bassist Tommy Cecil, and percussionist Chuck Redd. Dig this gig! At 8:30 & 10:30 p.m. tonight & tomorrow at the Willard Hotel’s Nest Lounge, 1401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. $14. (202) 628-9100. (Joel E. Siegel)
