THURSDAY

While on a honeymoon cruise, young bride Juliette discovers that her new husband has married her for her money. Deciding to seek another sort of mate, she trades places with a mail-order bride traveling to meet her intended, a Swiss missionary in India. Juliette is not prepared, however, for the hard life she has impulsively chosen. Fire in Paradise is the latest effort from Swiss director Markus Imhoof, who’s best known in this country for another film with an emigration theme: 1980’s The Boat Is Full, which powerfully addresses Switzerland’s reluctance to admit Jewish immigrants during WWII. Fire screens at 8 p.m. at the Embassy of Switzerland, 2900 Cathedral Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 745-7928. (MJ)
