There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The straight-faced positivity that Brian “BT” Transeau exudes on his second record, ESCM, has the potential to melt the icy cynic in all of us. I said “potential.” The Boyds, Md., resident communes with nature throughout his mostly electronic albumfrom the outdoor sounds of evening that chirp away at the beginning of “Firewater” to the crickets and lapping water that end “Flaming June.” With such overt signs of tree-luvin’, BT’s music could easily have become an unendurable cliché to anyone other than sandal-clad technophiles. While some copious new-age twinklings remain, the take-me-higher-isms of his hugely successful first album are more subdued here. And from the funky, techno squealer “Orbitus Teranium” to the Euro-poppy “Lullaby for Gaia,” BT knows how keep the beats flowing like…water, like lava, like love. BT sends out good vibrations along with The Crystal Method, David Holmes, and Taylor at 9 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $17.50. (202) 393-0930. (Christopher Porter)
