Nowadays, is it possible for a reviewer to be perceptive and eloquent and remain positive? Holly Bass, in her account of our bio-documentary video film Adriana (“Belly’s Last Jam,” 1/30), has proved that this is possible, in amazing, graceful style. In producing and editing the film, we intended it to represent something like “Adriana’s valentine back to the world”—following the bitterness and many tragedies that dogged her after a heyday of stardom on Washington stages as a leading dancer. So, this was intended as dance film, success story, and Washington local color at its most intense. That Bass so sensitively absorbed and reflected our best intentions will remain for me an astonishing phenomenon.
