Most people know pianist Matthew Shipp for his intense, often discordant music. But By the Law of Music, Shipp’s fall release with his “String” Trio, is reflective and oddly comforting. Shipp still produces free-floating melody lines that seem to crisscross in every conceivable manner before crashing together into what the pianist calls “superchords.” Rather than the explosion of sound familiar to fans of Shipp’s work in the David S. Ware group, the superchords on By the Law of Music tend to implode. The quirky sonic lineup of bassist William Parker and violinist Mat Maneri keeps everything simmering without letting the lid blow off. See Matthew Shipp’s “String” Trio quietly cook at 8 p.m. at University of the District of Columbia Recital Hall, 4200 Connecticut Ave. NW. $10. (202) 232-5061. (CP)
