There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Unwound’s sixth full-length release, Challenge for a Civilized Society, finds the Olympia, Wash., trio expanding its tried-and-true tortured guitar/rumbling bass/dissenting drums formula with new textures. The sound’s still distorted, but songs like “No Tech!” and “Meet the Plastics” refer back to the rhythmic thrust and pull of Gang of Four. “Sonata for Loudspeakers” is a gorgeous sonic instrumental litany in classic Unwound style, revealing the band’s penchant for smooth major-minor shifts, this time layered with bleary trumpet bursts. Tonight’s show, judged against the band’s last appearance at the Black Cat, should be fairly fullnot just with the chain-walleted kids but with harmonic disarray and disaffection. With Bunnyfoot Charm and fellow Olympians ICU at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6. (202) 667-7960. (Amy Domingues)
