On Heavenly, Ladysmith Black Mambazo teams up with Lou Rawls, Dolly Parton, and Phoebe Snow for gospel takes on “Chain Gang,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and “People Get Ready,” respectively. Such crossover attempts (along with a Billy Joel cover) prove to be the album’s weakest efforts, as they relegate Joseph Shabalala and his compatriots to providing backup harmonies, which producer Alan Abrahams has inexplicably buried under sterile studio hack work. Thank goodness, that approach, and those musicians, are absent from the album’s other church-rooted collaborations. The a cappella iscathamiya songs allow the group to properly display its patented call-and-response arrangements and sublime, soulful phrasing. At 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $22.50. (703) 549-7500. (Steve Kiviat)
