FRIDAY

While Trinidad produces the world’s most popular soca, Barbados has been offering its share of adept artists since the ’80s. The Caribbean’s latest favorite, Square One, is making its first appearance in the D.C. area. On its second CD, Sweetness, the band switches back and forth between chanted male vocals and Allison Hines’ crooning. While her rendition of “Redemption Song” is too slick, her flirtatious delivery of cuts like “Aye Aye Aye” and “Controller/Feelin De Vibes” helps explain the group’s appeal. Although the keyboard work is occasionally too smooth and the drum programming doesn’t boom enough, Hines’ exhortations to dancers to “wind and grind” make these songs percolate just fine. At 11 p.m. at Crossroads, 4103 Baltimore Ave., Bladensburg. $25. (301) 927-1056. (Steve Kiviat)
