“Dr. Laura Hates Your Guts” reads the front page banner (Demimonde, 4/17). I think of her approach as more tough love with an attitude. She has an unparalleled ability to get people to figure out what’s really at the root of a tough situation and to set aside all of the extenuating circumstances that keep people from moving forward. Arion Berger points out that Dr. Laura’s concern with moral probity and getting people to control their selfish impulses proves that she lacks disinterested judgment, which is supposed to be the basis of psychotherapy. Perhaps, but what I think this really shows is that a therapist doesn’t have to be a (stereotypical) spineless sounding board in order to be helpful.
