Last summer I made a mistake. I supported the Mount Vernon site as the correct choice for the new Washington Convention Center (The Mail, 1/16). OK, I was wrong. The best location for the new center is Union Station North.
There are numerous factors why that site is better, expansion capabilities, quality of life, and design choices among them. When visitors and guests arrive from the northeast portal, currently the visual messages they get are confusing, to put it nicely. However, using the Hecht warehouse coupled with the Black Entertainment Television complex and existing rail transportation lines would provide an excellent design context for “the Gateway to Washington, D.C.”
The Union Station North site is the best logical solution to this problem. It is never too late to admit to an error….Just open your eyes.
