There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
In 1977, Gary Himmelfarb embarked on a pilgrimage to Jamaica, where he converted to Rastafarianism. Since returning to the States he has spread the faith’s musical message as an import record distributor, as radio DJ Dr. Dread, and via his own Kensington-based label, RAS. In “An Evening With Dr. Dread: The Story of RAS Records,” Himmelfarb will explain the Real Authentic Sound he’s promoted since 1980, with selections ranging from the trio harmonies of Israel Vibration to the dub of Mad Professor and the lover-rock of Dennis Brown. Still producing new CDs, he’ll also discuss his philosophy on keeping the RAS output contemporary in feel while retaining its core values. At 7 p.m. at the Library of Congress’ Pickford Theater, James Madison Building, 1st & Independence Ave. SE. Free. (202) 707-1848. (Steve Kiviat)
