Democracy First applauds City Paper for its incisive analysis of the trials and tribulations of the District’s moribund ANCs (“Democracy Inaction,” 5/29). We also very much appreciate its preliminary consideration of our proposal to create a 120-member D.C. citizens legislature. We believe an expanded legislature will serve the vital interests of the city, reinvigorating the political culture while promoting good local government capable of achieving a high level of accountability.

Democracy First maintains that government works best when it reflects the true interests of the community, which, of course, it is meant to serve. Only by building a democracy rooted in the community, and one wholly representative of the diverse interests of the city, can the people of D.C. ever claim what they never really had—authentic representative government of and by the people.
