On its second major-label release, Nature Film, Ohio trio Scrawl (pictured) mixes the old and the new by retrieving a few classic songs from the vaults of its 12-year career and revisiting them with undeniable vigor and tasteful renovation. Produced by Tim O’Heir (Sebadoh, Superdrag), Nature Film is an example of Scrawl’s ability to remain consistent in contrast to the fluctuation so common to many long-standing bands making the switch from indie to major labeldom; and not only are the six revamped songs (including “Charles” and “Rot”) great, but the six new ones make the grade as well. There’s “Don’t We Always Get There,” a slow ode to world-weary road-trips, featuring a signature Scrawl guitar riff from Marcy Mays as well as some lovely vocals. And in the jagged-edge enervation of “Everyone I Saw Tonight,” when Mays sings “You had all that time and I want it/You did everything you set out to do” it’s hard to imagine that Scrawl hasn’t accomplished everything it wanted to with this album. Scrawl opens tonight for former D.C. natives Shudder to Think, who have been busy during the past year composing soundtracks for two independent films, the Ally Sheedy angst-drama High Art and Lemonhead bassist Jesse Peretz’s tender romance First Love, Last Rites. The latter features Shudder to Think as a backing band with a host of guest vocalists, including Liz Phair, Billy Corgan, and the late Jeff Buckley, rendering songs written in a psuedo-oldies style that sound surprisingly fresh.
