I would like to congratulate the Washington City Paper and author Eddie Dean on the feature “The Black and the Gray” (7/17). As an author and historian, I am well aware of the difficulties faced when attempting to do an article of this magnitude. The research was very well done, and the content, while informative, managed to avoid the usual “Smithsoninsomniac” qualities that usually plague such works.
It is often difficult to educate people about the multicultural aspects of the War Between the States, on both sides of the conflict. You have managed to do just that! Your insightful style coupled with the devil-may-care attitude that abounds in “alternative” weekly newspapers created the right environment for the success of this story. Everyone there should be proud! Go down to Georgetown and celebrate!
I would like to ask for permission to reprint this article for use in school presentations. This type of reporting is often enjoyed by students and teachers alike, and would go a long way toward eliminating some long-held misconceptions. I look forward to a reply. Until then…
Sic semper, ’tis the proud refrain….
