Eddie Dean’s article “The Black and the Gray” (7/17) is another attempt to resurrect the Lost Cause. Because a few Southern blacks took up arms against the Union, this is supposed to add legitimacy to the Southern Confederacy. The South was a degenerative society. They lagged badly behind the North in almost every way, in education, manufacturing, civil rights. They were almost too dependent on one crop, cotton, while opportunities to expand their economy were readily at hand. Their leaders put their energies into expanding slavery. Although Southerners fought with courage and persistence, so did the German SS. You can always write love notes to them, too, and you will always be wrong.
