Klezmer, the brassy, jazzy, Jewish folk/dance music, has undergone quite a revival over the past two decades. Every major city now has at least several klezmer bands, and several distinct schools of klezmer have developed (as should come as no surprise, because the earliest klezmer was itself a fusion of Jewish traditional music and popular Eastern European styles). That fusion continues today with bands like the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, who reflect their Crescent City background by playing the most funked up, rockin’ brand of klezmer yet. Their live shows and recordings mix ancient Yiddish melodies with lively N’awlins carnival beats, swingin’ rock ‘n’ roll, and lots of improvisation. The jammin’ starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $16.50. (703) 549-7500. (Ken Roseman)
