Tell Joel E. Siegel (“Deadly Dancing,” 8/28) that he’s exaggerated the number of Cornell student suicides. The reputation Cornell has for students “gorging out” was never deserved. Many of the suicides were not by students but other troubled souls drawn to the spectacular bridges over the deep gorges on both sides of campus. Besides, I made that same trudge to class across the gorges at Cornell and saw only one corpse being hauled up in four years. Joel claims that he saw this “at least twice each term.” Unlikely.
Nevertheless, please don’t act like the Boston Globe and fire him. Joel writes well, and I enjoy his reviews. Please keep him writing just make sure he’s fair to Cornell.
