There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Flying Low, the second album by the loose collective known as the Willard Grant Conspiracy, contains no info on the group, but it does includes the anti-egoist note, “If someone tells you they played on this, they probably did.” While the band suppresses its individual credits behind a group name, the earthy sounds on Flying Low aren’t nearly so anonymous. Vestiges of Nick Cave’s moan, the Tindersticks’ drone, American Music Club’s sad-eyed passion, and the Scud Mountain Boys’ rustic storytelling coalesce into the darkly insinuating sound of the Conspiracy. Touring without a rhythm section will put the spotlight squarely on the Willard Grant Conspiracy’s various singer-songwriters. Don’t let them escape unseen when they perform at 9:30 p.m. at the Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 525-8646. (Christopher Porter)
