Regarding your article (“Part-Timers Finally Show Up”) in the Sept. 11 issue, it is indeed disturbing that, at a time when our democratic processes are severely curtailed by an overattentive congress, many of our own elected D.C. councilmenbers do not feel compelled to attend or vote on issues that affect our lives so profoundly, thereby further diminishing citizens’ voices. This in spite of one of the higher salaries for comparable positions in the nation.

Do you suppose anyone on the D.C. Council would be willing to sponsor a bill stipulating that members be paid on a prorated basis, based on their presence at the council meetings?
