I have just been reading about Goatman (“The Legend of Goatman,” 9/18). The story at the beginning of the article interests me because I have heard it before—only the version I heard took place in my native England, either in Epping Forest or on Dartmoor (substitute your own desolate, underpopulated area!), and ended with the police finding the girl and telling her the tapping noise was the maniac (escaped lunatic, or sometimes escaped inmate from Dartmoor Prison) banging her boyfriend’s/husband’s dismembered head on the car roof (or did you edit that out as just too grisly?).

It makes a fine Halloween story, and I wonder how many countries on either side of the Atlantic it has traveled to (and, for that matter, where it really came from). Happy Halloween!
