FRIDAY
For Midwesterners still suspicious of Dylan’s flight to New York, Greg Brown is the real Woody Guthrie of the heartland. The Iowa folkie hasn’t had a pretentious thought since the ’60s; his songs strive for literary significance but come off as more conversational than scripted. Love and art may be his inspirations, but his pride is the rural life. “I’m a hick and I dance like one,” he sings on “Billy from the Hills,” one of the many Brown classics that few people have ever heard. If he gets to town with some time to spare, don’t be surprised if he shows up for the gig in fishing waders. At 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $19.50. (703) 549-7500.
