Bassist Wilber Morris acts more like a gatekeeper than a leader on Boom Swing, his live CD with tenor saxophonist Thomas Borgmann and the late, great drummer Dennis Charles (who died this past March). The veteran bassist, who has spent time at the side of such greats as David Murray, Butch Morris, and Myra Melford, among many others, lets Borgmann out of the pen to run free, blowing as urgently as a hurricane. Morris doesn’t fade into the background, though. He secures the low end with a tone both buttery-smooth and molasses-thick as Charles beats an appropriately mighty “boom swing.” Reggie Nicholson takes over Charles’ chair when the trio performs at 8 p.m. at the University of the District of Columbia’s Music Program Recital Hall, 4200 Connecticut Ave. NW, Building 46-W. $10.
