The promise of New Music from China may evoke all those dreadful East-West operatic pastiches that celebrated carrying manure up the mountain for the greater glory of Chairman Mao. The new music of composer Zhou Long, however, is rooted in the old: He will lead two groups, Music from China and the New Music Consort, in a performance of a reconstructed piece discovered in the Buddhist caves at Dunhuang, which will be followed by his own, related composition, “Tales from the Cave.” Also on the program is “The Points,” by noted female Chinese composer Chen Yi. At 3 p.m. at the Freer Gallery’s Meyer Auditorium, 12th & Jefferson Dr. SW. Free. (202) 357-4880. (Mark Jenkins)
