Dreaming of a green Christmas—just like de one yuh always know—the Caribbean Creative Circle developed Echoes of the Islands, a nostalgic theatrical production featuring two one-act plays about Christmas in the Caribbean. In C. Jeanean Gibbs’ Runaway Slaves, Blossom is a young Caribbean woman who assimilates into U.S. culture and is psyched to attend a hiphop concert when her aunts urge her to go home for Christmas by reciting a story of her great grandfather, who escaped slavery. In Sherry Ann Mitchell’s A Christmas Wish, Jean goes from rags to riches when she moves with her husband into a big house with several cars. Not knowing how to manage money, she loses everything when he dies, the neighbors gossip, and she has to ward off the landlord’s attempts to be intimate with her while providing a happy Christmas for her son. Also featured will be Caribbean griot Hollis “Flash” Lashley, Positive Vibration Steel Orchestra, and La Musicale Dance Work.
