Thanks to Erik Wemple for his article “Running a Tab” (12/18) about Rumors. You should know, however, that nonpayment of taxes isn’t the only way that Rumors is screwing the District.
This year, Rumors had plenty of money to do a major expansion and renovation. And it was all illegal because Rumors built a permanent structure on our sidewalk. That’s public spaceas in belonging to the public. It is illegal to build a permanent structure on our public space.
Did the District’s Public Space Administration act to stop Rumor’s illegal building spree? No. Does the Public Space Administration have anyone to enforce laws, rules, and regulations? No. Does the Public Space Administration even know how certain businesses are using our public space? No.
Here is another opportunity for Tony Williams’ administration.
