Not every D.C. rock band takes its cues from Fugazi. On its self-released Silverscreen Daydream, year-old quartet Phaser utilizes Beatles harmonies and guitar riffs along with Oasis-like melodramatic arrangements. The EP was recorded and engineered by Geoff Turner at WGNS studios and features Tuscadero drummer Jack Hornady, who has since been replaced by a permanent stickman. When asked about the Britpop comparisons, bassist Boris Skalsky proudly owns up: “The best stuff in rock today is coming out of England….We’re not trying to be like British bands, but [their style is] certainly something to aspire to.” (SK)
