The independent pop label is alive and well, and Teenbeat’s 1999 sampler is the evidence, with 14 of the label’s bands proffering various definitions of the form’s possibilities. Teenbeat founder Mark Robinson rocks out with Flin Flon on the up-tempo “Flatbush.” The Rondelles flirt with grand pop aspirations on a bare and beautiful cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Aden (pictured) breaks out the whispered “do do do do dos” on “Plunky ’99.” True Love Always gets sentimental and reflective on “Faust,” a piano and vocal number with background synthesizers by Robinson. And on “Number One,” Hot Pursuit delivers a sugary pop promise: “It’s not hard, it’s not heavy, it’s not anything that you don’t know already.” Amen to that. The Teenbeat 14th Anniversary Show, with Tuscadero, host Butch Willis, and the aforementioned bands, begins at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6. (202) 667-7960.
