Dorothy Benton Lewis wants reparations for slavery (Questionnaire, 2/19). I have a suggestion: She and the members of her group should tour the national cemetery at Gettysburg and walk among the endless rows of Northern war dead. They should also visit the cemeteries at Antietam, Murfreesboro, and dozens of others. Visit the Confederate cemeteries around the South including the mass grave in the Hollywood Cemetery at Richmond. Freedom for the slaves was bought at the price of hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded on both sides. After Lewis visits the cemeteries, she can mark the bill “Paid in full.”
